Cancer Survival Strategies

By Jenny Wright

Cancer is one of the most widespread and deadly ailments that affect people today. Cancer can be caused by many things in our environment. It appears without much warning in its initial stages, but it is still detectable. If you would like to catch this disease in its early stages, then continue reading this article.

Take all the medicine that your doctor prescribes to you, and make sure you are taking the correct doses. If you have trouble remembering what to take, buy a pill holder that will store all your pills that need to be taken that day. Cancer does not equal death, so try to take care of yourself as best as you can.

Signs of ovarian cancer can be very subtle. It is sometimes referred to as the "silent killer" due to the lack of symptoms until the cancer has progressed. The most common symptom includes pain in the the abdominal area, pelvis or back. Increased size of the abdomen area is another symptom. The stomach appears similar to that of a pregnant woman's stomach.

Cancer patients will regain their strength after the treatment is over, even if the cancer isn't gone, so this is a great time to actually get out there and enjoy your life. It doesn't have to be the proverbial bucket list, but doing the things you enjoy will remind you that you should be fighting the cancer so that you can always enjoy these things.

Colon cancer is hard to detect due to a lack of easily detectable symptoms in earlier stages, so there should be much alarm if you do start to see symptoms, such as cramping, thin stools, unexplainable weight loss and bloody stools. If you experience these symptoms, call a doctor immediately.

If you have hiccups from your chemotherapy treatment, talk with your doctor before trying any home remedies. Some of these remedies can actually make your hiccups worse, such as laying upside down and drinking. Your oncologist may want you to try other methods like propping a pillow up before going to sleep.

Many herbal supplements are on the market and when diagnosed with cancer you may want to turn to some of them for their additional benefits. They can help the immune system and strengthen the body's natural defenses. However, be sure to consult your doctor or a professional in the herbal field before adding herbal supplements to your diet.

Eating blueberries on a regular basis just might help in your fight against cancer. Some evidence exists which shows that blueberries have a positive effect on colon cancer in laboratory rats. Your goal should be to consume about a cup and a half daily. If that's too much any amount will provide some benefit.

To help reduce the risk of cancer, use a filter on your kitchen faucet. There are a variety of cancer-causing chemicals in tap water, including arsenic and chromium. A filter drastically cuts down on these contaminants and may even encourage you to drink more water, which has a number of other benefits for your health.

If someone you know has contracted cancer, the best thing you can do now is listen to this person's wants and needs. Trying to insert yourself into their life by force may backfire and cause this person to reject you, and treating this person differently may have a devastating effect. Listen to their needs.

If you are a cancer survivor, make sure that you have information about your previous cancer treatments. Unfortunately, cancer comes back with a vengeance sometimes, so keep your records about what surgeries and what types of chemotherapy and radiation therapy you have undergone. This information will help you better communicate with doctors.

It is important for women who are receiving cancer treatment to not get pregnant. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause serious birth effects in fetuses. If you are already pregnant and find out that you have cancer, your doctor may be able to find alternate treatments that are safe for you and your fetus.

By using accurate information to assist you in the battle against such a sickness, you can put yourself in a better position to ultimately win. Do not take the great tips you just read for granted. They may just help to save your life or the life of someone you care about. I also strongly recommend finding a cancer oncologist to consult with further.

By Allison Blakley

When someone you love is battling cancer, it is important for you to learn as much as you can about his or her diagnosis. It will help you to not have to ask what they need but rather do the things they need without being asked.

Spending time outdoors can help to keep you healthy, and is beneficial in the fight against cancer. Scientists know that Vitamin D is beneficial in decreasing incidents of cancer. The sun naturally creates Vitamin D so outdoor time is valuable in achieving your body's optimum levels. Try to get about fifteen minutes of outdoor time every day.

If you frequent beaches, lakes, or are generally outside often in the sun; it is extremely wise to use sunscreen. Even when you believe it is not enough for sunburn, the rays alone are able to start the disease and cause a lifetime of damage. Using SPF 30 or above keeps your skin shielded from the potential damage.

Detecting cancer at its earliest stages is the next best thing to prevention. Some screening tests are mammograms for breast cancer and PSA tests for prostate cancer. There are also tests you should get that can find precancerous changes and have them treated before they progress to cancer. Keep a regular screening schedule and call your doctor if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

If you live alone, try to stock up on meals when you feel well. Cook up a large batch of chicken or soup and freeze it. Since there will probably be days when your cancer treatment leaves you feeling a little weak, it will be very helpful to be able to quickly heat up a meal and relax.

They say that eating an apple a day will keep the doctor away, but eating an onion a day can actually keep cancer at bay. Because of the large amount of antioxidants founds in onions, eating them regularly can help to eliminate free radicals from your body and thus help you to prevent contracting cancer.

If you recently found out that you have cancer, be sure to quit smoking and stop drinking alcohol. These habits are bad for a healthy person, but in a cancer patient, it can promote the growth of new cancer cells or spread the existing ones. Talk to your doctor about quitting methods.

Do not fight your doctor when he offers you some good pain killers. There is no reason for you to have to suffer with the many wonderful drugs that are on the market these days that will make you more comfortable. If your doctor gives you one and you are not feeling better, ask for something different.

During chemotherapy, diarrhea can be a problem. Stay away from foods which aggravate this condition. Some foods you should avoid are fried foods, anything high in sugar, caffeine, high fiber foods, nuts, seeds, whole grains and dried fruit. If you have diarrhea be sure to drink plenty of fluids so you do not become dehydrated.

If you are one of the many women that has dense breast tissue, find a mammogram facility that works with digital imagery. Digital scans will do a much better job at detecting cancer in the women with dense breast tissue than the traditional film would. It will provide your doctor with a clearer image and make it easier to read the images.

If you have grown up in the sweet, sunny south--especially in the days before sunscreen,--you will need to be checked for basal cell carcinoma regularly. This form of cancer is directly related to exposure to the sun. If you were badly sunburned as a child, you are at high risk for this cancer.

As a preventative measure, some women who are genetically predisposed to breast cancer, may have a mastectomy. Chemotherapy is often able to kill cancerous cells, but it also affects normal cells leading to anemia, hair loss and other side effects. Hormone therapy can sometimes cause certain types of tumors to regress. New treatments are being researched and developed on a continuous basis, click here for even more information.
